Annotation
The article examines the evolution of theoretical approaches to understanding economic inequality within the framework of philosophical and economic concepts. It highlights the key ideas of twentieth-century political philosophers — John Rawls, Ronald Dworkin, Gerald Cohen, and Robert Nozick — who provide divergent interpretations of justice and the foundations for resource redistribution. Philosophical theories are predominantly normative, focusing on issues of justice and equality of opportunity. In contrast, economic science offers positive explanatory models, including Simon Kuznets’ hypothesis, Thomas Piketty’s theory of capital, Branko Milanovic’s studies on global inequality, Claudia Goldin and Lawrence Katz’s concept of the “race between education and technology,” as well as institutional and social perspectives advanced by Joseph Stiglitz and Anthony Atkinson. The analysis demonstrates the distinct research focuses of philosophy and economics while emphasizing the importance of their integration for a more comprehensive understanding of the nature and dynamics of economic inequality.
