The personnel shortage in the regional labor market means the task of revising traditional business approaches to working with graduates of educational institutions. This
topic is especially relevant for the real sector of the economy, which is in need of blue-collar and engineering personnel. The main source of young personnel to work in blue-collar jobs is colleges. The system of vocational education is actively developing, including due to pressure from the regulator and specialized enterprises, but is its movement adequate to the needs of the main recipient of the result — students? The purpose of the study is to study the ideas of students and college graduates about the possibilities of working at the plant and upcoming career and labor expectations in order to develop proposals to improve the activities of regional enterprises in terms of career guidance and attracting young people. The main research method was a sociological survey conducted among students and graduates of colleges in the Kurgan region in 2023. A total of 2,522 respondents were interviewed. An in-depth interview was also conducted with 7 experts in the field of personnel management and career guidance of enterprises. The study showed that most college students are not interested in working in their specialized specialty at an industrial enterprise in the region. This is largely due to the low level of career guidance work and interaction between the enterprise and the educational organization, weak HR brands of enterprises, and the interest of young people in migrating to another region of the country. Taking into account the identified features of young people’s motivation, recommendations were formulated for the HR departments of plants and college management on developing work with students, for their involvement in labor activities
at the plant. The personnel shortage in the labor market has become the norm that enterprises are forced to put up with, the demographic situation cannot be changed quickly, which means it is necessary to adapt the personnel work system to the new conditions, primarily in terms of working with students and graduates of educational organizations.
