The changes currently taking place in the global economy affect many aspects of human life in different countries, including the quality and standard of living of the population. The United States, being the largest economy in the world, takes an active part in the existing changes, often provoking them in different regions of the world.
In this regard, the socio-economic state of the United States itself and the standard of living of the population within the country are of interest. The paper studies the consumption of the population in the states of the Southeast of the United States in 2000–2023. The results of the work showed that the standard of living of citizens in these regions is relatively lower than the average American values. Some states, such as Mississippi and West Virginia, are the poorest in the United States. The analysis also showed certain cultural characteristics of the US population. For example, the cost of buying and maintaining a car, as well as the cost of purchasing gasoline and other types of fuel are considered essential items here, since the country does not have a developed public transportation system. In addition, due to the lack of a system of compulsory state health insurance, a high share of the population’s health expenditure is recorded, since most medical services in the United States are paid.
