Annotation

The relevance of the study is determined by the need to address the structural problems of rural areas of the Far Eastern Federal District (FEFD), where depopulation, youth outflow, and low economic diversification threaten sustainable development. Despite government support programs (Far Eastern Hectare, national projects), imbalances persist: a decline in the rural population (up to 25 % over 10 years), aging, where the proportion of people over working age is 28–30 %, and an infrastructure deficit (there are settlements in rural areas of Buryatia without access to specialized medical care). An analysis of the socio-economic profile of rural areas of the FEFD is conducted, and recommendations for regional policy are developed. The methodology includes a statistical analysis of Rosstat data (2010–2023), a typology of territories based on sustainability indices, and regional examples. The results revealed the dominance of single-industry models; the low effectiveness of government programs; and the need for differentiated measures (cluster growth, relocation of depopulated villages). The novelty lies in the integration of demographic, economic, and institutional indicators into the typology of rural areas. Support and adjustments are needed for national projects and the implementation of social contracts for youth. The article emphasizes the importance of synchronizing federal and local initiatives to reduce imbalances.
