The study identifies the factors of the external environment that have most negatively affected the functioning and economic activity of SMEs at present. The dynamics of the number of openings, closings and bankruptcies among SMEs in Russia in 2019-2023 has been analyzed, based on which it is revealed that the number of closings and bankruptcies of enterprises is currently decreasing and at the same time the number of new enterprises is increasing.
