Indicators of the standard of living of the population can be divided into two large groups: financial and non-financial. The most significant financial indicators that determine the living standards of citizens, in our opinion, are wages, per capita income, the subsistence minimum, the ratio of average per capita income to the subsistence minimum. There are many factors that affect the financial indicators of the standard of living of the population, which include the level of socio-economic development of the region or the whole country, the degree of industrialization, geographical location, the level of urbanization, the political and economic significance of the region or city. One of the most important factors is the migration of the population, leading to total urbanization, to the emergence of multimillion agglomerations. In this study, we set the task of identifying the causes of urbanization and higher rates of growth in living standards in large metropolitan areas compared to less populated areas. For comparison, we took data from two neighboring regions — Moscow and the Moscow region. Based on the comparative analysis, it was revealed that political, administrative and managerial factors have a significant impact on the standard of living of the population. The state budget is formed in Moscow, the head offices of the largest companies in Russia are located there, bringing the greatest income to the budget and providing millions of jobs. Moscow is the largest transport hub of the country and the only one on such a scale. The second significant factor that raises the financial standards of life in Moscow is the urbanization of the population. This is a global trend, when the population from rural areas and small towns migrates to large metropolitan areas, including the capitals of countries. Urbanization works like a magnet, attracting new population to the city and increasing the force of attraction. In other words, with the growth of the city, the financial indicators of the standard of living of the population increase at the highest rate. The study was carried out on the basis of scientific and economic literature, materials and works of other authors, as well as data on the standard of living of the population published by the statistics authorities of Moscow and the Moscow region.
