Annotation

In recent years, there has been a trend of increased demand for non-cash methods of conducting transactions — mostly through plastic cards. This article is devoted to a comprehensive study of the state of the Russian bank card market in 2013–2020. The article assesses the impact of various factors, including the 2014–2015 currency crisis, anti-Russian economic sanctions from Western countries and the COVID-19 pandemic, on the dynamics of plastic card issuance and changes in citizens’ preferences for them. The rating of the most popular debit and credit cards is given and analyzed. According to the results obtained in the course of the study, a steady prevalence of debit cards and an increase in credit card debts during the study period were revealed. The trend of gradual complete replacement of bank cards with digital ones in the future is predicted due to the increased influence and importance of digitalization of the economy.
