Digital transformation is emerging as a key factor in the development of the oil and gas industry amid global economic instability, technological competition, and climate change agendas. The increasing importance of R&D and digital technologies necessitates a comprehensive assessment of their impact on the industry’s production and institutional characteristics. The limited research on these processes at the macroeconomic level and within corporate entities renders this study particularly relevant. The objective of this research is to evaluate the transformation and efficiency of the oil and gas sector in the context of digitalization. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, including econometric modeling based on data from 36 countries over the period 2008–2021, utilizing digital and institutional indicators, as well as a case study of PJSC Gazprom. The case analysis examines the implementation of digital technologies, calculates a digital maturity index, and incorporates expert surveys. Econometric testing conducted by the authors indicates that digitalization has a positive effect on oil and gas production growth. The case study demonstrates an increasing digital maturity of the largest oil and gas company, characterized by active deployment of digital twins for exploration, predictive maintenance systems, and pipeline monitoring via Internet of Things (IoT), which in turn contributes to operational advantages. The findings confirm that digitalization significantly influences the transformation of the oil and gas industry, enhancing its operational efficiency both at the macroeconomic level and within individual companies.
